This past week I have been in London. My family and I have been staying in an old professor’s house. I think his name was Kirke. He was showing us all the rooms in his house except one. He let us settle in and made us dinner.
Everyone was sleeping by 10; so I decided to go see what was in that room. I slowly opened the creaking door. The room was big and there was a large object covered by a sheet. I slowly pulled off the dust-filled sheet. Under the sheet was a huge wardrobe. I slowly opened it, and then that’s when I heard foot steps coming. I quickly closed the door the door and went to the back of the wardrobe. But the problem was that I couldn’t find the back. It seemed to go on forever. I could no longer see but then I felt something cold and things poking me. I turned around and it was snow and branches. I quickly ran out. Was I outside? Was I dreaming? It was so beautiful. I looked around and there where huge trees with the most exquisite looking apples. I was so hungry so I took my retainer out and placed it on a rock next to me. The apple tasted magical. Then all of a sudden I heard a crunching noise. I quickly turned around to see this weird looking half man half horse creature. Then I realized he was eating my retainer and I yelled STOP! He slowly turned and said hello. I asked him where I was and he said… Narnia

That’s the story on how I lost my retainers.

If you just got braces over the summer, congratulations – you are on your way to a Spectacular Smile and we are so excited to be a part of your journey.  Here are some helpful hints as you adjust to wearing braces at the start of a new school year.
You’re not alone!  Lots of kids get braces over the summer.  If you are feeling self-conscious, take a look around you in any class or during lunchtime – we bet there will be other kids who got braces too.
If this is your first school year with braces, make sure that you have a mouth guard to protect your mouth and your braces.  Don’t have one?  Stop by our office and we’ll be happy to make sure you have the most important piece of equipment – a high-quality mouth guard to wear over braces.  Dr. Gellerman offers mouth guards FREE to our patients and area schools because we don’t want anyone getting hurt just because they did not have this simple piece of protective gear.
Never, ever put your retainer in a napkin at lunch time.  It’s almost certain that the napkin will go in the trash.  We have so many stories from kids just like you who take such good care of their braces and their teeth but at some point they put their retainer in a napkin and then spend the afternoon digging through trash to find them. Keep a spare case in your locker or backpack – it’s a lot easier! Need an extra?  Stop by the office to pick one up.
Not only will you have a Spectacular Smile, but you are also going to have a healthier mouth, and that means a healthier body.  Studies have shown that a clean and healthy mouth is important for your overall health, and teeth that are straight and aligned are easier to keep clean, which will keep you healthier!
Stash a braces kit in your locker – a small toothbrush and toothpaste, dental wax and flossers.  If you don’t want to brush your teeth at school, make sure it’s the first thing you do when you get home.  Not motivated to brush after school – see our blog post about the white spots that can happen when you don’t brush enough!

Hoping you have a Spectacular Start to your school year!!!
